Viñalba is a family-owned company, set-up and run by husband and wife team Hervé and Diane Joyaux Fabre. Herve is the winemaker, having grown up in Bordeaux he set up one of the first “foreign” wineries in Argentina in 1992. Herve now owns some of the oldest Malbec plantings in Argentina, from 1908, and was the first person to produce a straight varietal Malbec, before this it was seen mainly as a blending partner; much like it’s role in Bordeaux! Sourced from vineyards at the foot of the Andes, grown at different altitudes to achieve the perfect balance between tannin and acidity.
The 2006 vintage of this Vinalba Malbec wine was named the Best Wine in the World under £10 at the Decanter awards, and subsequent vintages do not disappoint at all, they have also picked up the Argentinian producer of the year in 2010. Rich and inviting on the nose, with ripe black fruits and hints of smoke, as well as mulberry, black cherry and dark chocolate. In the mouth this wine literally wraps itself around every corner of your mouth with its ripe dark plum fruits, sweet tannins and dark chocolate and mocha its rich blackcurrant and plum fruit combining with toasty vanilla oak to create an elegant yet full-bodied mouthfeel. Great with most meat dishes, but is especially perfect with a big, juicy steak.
