Product Details
In the wake of the 1918 Flu Epidemic, the Robertson community established an orphanage Die Herberg to care for the children left orphaned. A large tract of farmland on the outskirts of town was donated to this end and hectares of fruit trees were established as a means of generating income for the orphanage.
In 2003 a few hectares of old apricot trees remained that, due to their age, were no longer profitable. Farmers in the area donated their time, experience, plant material and equipment to put 5 hectares under vines. This is the fifth vintage from these vines and as since the first harvest in 2008 the wine is blended by Abrie Bruwer of Springfield Estate; and it shows in his unique winemaking style as he uses the ancient technique of fermenting uncrushed berries with native yeast from the grapes. After aging for 1 year in French barrels, it was bottled without finings or filtration and then aged for a further 12 months bottle aging took place prior to release. Blended from Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has flavours of plums and blackcurrants, along with a rich earthiness.
